TBM Hardwoods has been a family-owned and operated hardwood distributor since 1955. While faces, ownership and the way "get 'er done" have changed over the years, our tradition for premium quality and commitment to customer service have not.
T. Baird McIlvain Sr. founded the original company with a single truck and a rented lumber shed in Philadelphia. His establishing of the company was a fateful moment in which five generations of experience had come full circle. In 1798, T. Baird's great-great-grandfather J. Gibson McIlvain had opened a lumber company--also in Phildelphia. With single-minded determination and a focus on matching customer needs with quality lumber, T. Baird set out on his own and rapidly developed a wholesale hardwood distribution business to meet the increasing demands of an expanding, post-war American economy.
In 1960, T. Baird bought five acres of flat, ideally-situated land in King of Prussia, PA along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. With access to railroad and highway, he built a 2 1/4 million board foot capacity shed and planing mill. Connected with some of the best sawmills in the country, T. Baird built a premium assorted inventory of kiln-dried hardwood lumber for the quality-minded customer.
T. Baird's son Tom joined the operation in 1965. With many summers of experience working in the yard, a business degree from Nichols College and expert guidance from his father, Tom helped expand the company's presence from Virginia to New Hampshire. Our reputation for dedicated customer service and quality spread as distribution expanded to include high profile accounts and nationally recognized brands.
The company expanded in the 1980s and became specialists and direct importers of exotic hardwoods, specifically Genuine Mahogany and Spanish Cedar from South and Central America. Headquarters moved from King of Prussia to Hanover, PA to consolidate kiln-drying operations and inventory. In the 1990s, Tom's children Kim, Baird and Russell McIlvain joined the company. TBM invested $1 million in 1990 in machinery to offer custom mouldings, ripsawing and priming to their full-service milling operations.
With the Hanover distribution yard holding more than 7 million BF in stock, a fleet curtain-side tractor trailers, and experienced and loyal workforce, TBM Hardwoods is proud to serve a wide variety of successful national and international hardwood manufacturers.
