Fraxinus spp.
White Ash is known for its stability and strength-to-weight ratio.
Open-pored hardwood with light-colored, almost white sapwood. Grain runs generally straight with a uniform, coarse texture.
Ash is suitable for architectural millwork and mouldings, furniture, flooring, kitchen cabinets and athletic equipment. A great craft wood. Its light weight, strength and shock resistance make Ash an excellent choice for tool handles, baseball bats, hockey sticks, oars, canoe paddles and the heels of ladies shoes. Ash steams and bends well; used to make the backs of chairs and curved furniture.
Our White Ash comes out of Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. It grows among other hardwood and softwood species. Ash kiln-dries well with little downgrade and is readily available.
Working Properties
Ash is a hardwood that finishes very well. It machines easily and takes nailing, screwing and glueing well. It can be stained to look like oak because of its similar grain pattern. Ash is not considered a good choice for use in exterior applications. Lightweight, stable, highly shock-resistant, strong and valued for its appearance, Ash is the hardwood of choice in many applications.
