Quercus spp.
Red Oak is one of the largest group in the Quercus family with broad distribution across North America, particularly the Eastern United States. Red Oak has significant commercial value. Trees can grow up to 150 feet tall and four feet wide in diameter. Red Oak differs in its porosity from its cousin, White Oak. Red Oak pores are open whereas White Oak pores are plugged with tyloses which make the species suitable for water-tight vessels.
It is a very dense hardwood with a medium, open-pored texture. Grain is straight and can be coarser than White Oak when surfaced. Its has a prominent grain stripe. Sapwood is salmon pink; heartwood is light reddish brown. Red Oak can contain mineral streaks and spots which is limited in FAS. Medullary rays are dark red in quartersawn Red Oak. With excellent workability properties, it machines, sands, turns, carves and bends well.
Stable and durable, Red Oak is used in a variety of applications including handrails, casing, furniture, flooring, cabinetry and panelling.
