African Mahogany

Khaya spp.

We source high quality African Mahogany (Khaya ivorensis, Khaya anthotheca) from West and Central African countries with a light-to-medium color, good density and texture. We avoid lower-priced Khaya that is really a mixture of specie variations grown in different regions. This material has a darker appearance and varies in its density, color and texture; workability suffers with this variation of Khaya. To maintain a consistent, premium product, TBM buys from mills that also process veneer and plywood as their log stocks tend to be best quality.

With a pale reddish brown color, African Mahogany in general has medium high density with a slightly coarser texture than South American or Genuine Mahogany; African Mahogany is more porous and absorbent. With an interlocked grain, pattern can run wavy or straight. African Mahogany is similar in appearance to Genuine Mahogany but has a more dramatic ribbon figure when quartersawn.

African Mahogany is stable and dense. Durable. It has moderate workability: African glues fairly easily, can be mortised with fair to good results, moulded, nailed, screwed and finished well. Takes stain, varnish well and polishes nicely. Working properties of K. invorensisare more desirable especially when planing and moulding as interlocked grain of other variations of specie can be wooly or fuzzy.

A less expensive and more readily available alternative to Genuine Mahogany, African Mahogany is used for decorative furniture elements, cabinetmaking, doors and windows, boat building, interior construction, joinery, paneling, plywood.
