Other common names for Swietenia macrophylla include Genuine Mahogany, Honduras/Honduran Mahogany, "Big Leaf" Mahogany and South American Mahogany.

Genuine Mahogany is considered the "true" mahogany when compared to African Mahogany. Grown throughout South and Central America, Genuine Mahogany trees produce highly-valued lumber known for its beautiful characteristics and excellent working properties. In the early 1990s, Costa Rica and the United States began petitioning the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) for the protection of Genuine Mahogany through study, conservacy and development of sustainable interntational trade recommendations. In 1995, Genuine Mahogany was added to the list of protected species which impacted the availablility and price of Genuine Mahogany in United States.

In the last 20 years, supply channels have slowly restablished themselves and adapted to the legal requirements for importation and sale of Genuine Mahogany. Prices remain high. Good quality lumber requires partnerships with reputable mills and brokers. Genuine Mahogany is an exotic hardwood with medium- to high-density and high strength-to-weight ratio. A fine, uniform texture. Relatively straight grain that can have swir and wavy patterningl. Genuine Mahogany has an attractive, even medium reddish brown color--unstained, it appears lighter than many realize, almost a salmon-pink, that darkens with age.

Genuine Mahogany has excellent workability. It machines, shapes and turns easily. Ideal for precision millwork including carving. Very stable after kiln-drying. Durable heartwood; highly resistant to fungi and natural decay with moderate resistance to dry-wood termites.

Mahogany is a premium hardwood with excellent interior and exterior millwork applications including panelling, doors and windows, moldings, banisters and railings, furniture, cabinetry, boat building, guitar backs and musical instruments.
