Tilia americana
Basswood is a creamy uniform-colored, lightweight hardwood also known as Linden. Native Americans used the long fibers of the inner bark for strong roping and to weave baskets and mats. Basswood trees grow to 60-90 feet tall in northern temperate regions of the United Stated and Canada, predominately in the Northern and Lake states. Basswood has a large sapwood area that is soft and easy to work with making it suitable for furniture and children’s toys.
Working properties
Basswood has a uniform texture and indistinct straight grain which allows it to be easily machined, carved, screwed, glued and finished. Basswood has excellent working properties.
