Hard Maple

Hard Maple is a dense, stable hardwood. Also called Rock Maple and Sugar Maple, Hard Maple grows throughout the Eastern United States, principally the Mid-Atlantic and Lake States, and Canada. Its syrupy by-product is often asked for at breakfast time when pancakes are served.

With an even, fine texture and straight grain, Hard Maple is prized for its creamy white sapwood (SAP). Heartwood has a tan, light brown color. Hard Maple can have a distinct "curly", "bird's eye" or "tiger-striped" grain pattern. Figured grain is rare and cannot be detected until logs are sawn. At TBM, we separate and set aside boards with curly or striped grain for special sale. When given the opportunity, we also purchase premium winter-cut, Northern Hard Maple, known for its bright white sapwood.

Hard Maple is stable, strong and durable with good working properties. It machines, glues and finishes well.

Used in high-traffic applications because its strength and ability to take abuse, Hard Maple is the choice for gyms, bowling alleys, squash courts and retail and residential floors. Because of its stability and durability, Hard Maple goes into store fixtures, skating rinks, hand rails, cabinetry, panelling, fine furniture, turnings and oilless bearings. It is odorless and imparts no taste to food so is used to make wooden bowls, cutting boards, kitchen utensils and butcher block countertops.
