Carya glabra
A beautiful and incredibly strong hardwood, Hickory grows throughout North America. Hickory has a striking appearance with a unique brown reddish colored heartwood and lighter colored sapwood. Grain runs predominantly straight with some irregularity and waviness. Texture is medium to corse.
Hickory has excellent steam bending characteristics with high shock resistance, stiffness and crushing strength. Hickory is difficult to work with and has moderate to severe blunting effect on cutters. It doesn't nail or glue well. Requires pre-drilling. Takes stain well and polishes nicely.
Hickory is used in flooring, golf club shafts, plywood, veneers and laminates for items requiring high shock resistance. Rustic Hickory or character grade Hickory has gained popularity as fine flooring for its striking color and distressed-look.
