Tabebuia spp.
An extremely dense, tight grained hardwood, Ipe has many trade names (Ironwood, Pau Lope) as well as many common names: Brazilian Walnut, Amapa, Guayacan polvillo, Greenheart, Madera negra, Tahuari, Lapacho negro and Cortez. Its distribution includes tropical areas of South and Central America. Ipe trees reach heights of 140 feet with truck diameters of 6 feet.
Similar to Cumaru, Ipe is reddish brown with lighter, darker striping. Lighter colored sapwood is usually removed at the mill but strips of it can be visible on edges. Texture is fine to medium. Ipe comes in nice long lengths with limited warp which are dimensionally pre-sorted. Ipe is available air dried (m.c. 12%) and kiln dried (for interior applications only).
Ipe is incredibly strong, durable and naturally rot-, fungi- and termite resistant. Its density makes Ipe difficult to work without carbide tipped saw blades. Pre-drilling and fasteners are required. Left to weather in the sun, untreated Ipe is rated to last 40+ years and will lighten to a consistent grey color similar to Teak. Treated annually with deck oil, it can last over a century!
Excellent for choice for exterior architectural millwork applications, decking, benches, Adirondack furniture, boat flooring,
