Also referred to as Utile, Sipo is a member of the mahogany 'Meliaceae' family. Distributed throughout West and Central Africa, Sipo is abundantly available in the Ivory Coast and grows well in moist deciduous high forests to heights of 150-200 feet.
Sipo can resemble flat-sawn Sapele. It has a uniform red- to purple brown heartwood and lighter brown sapwood. Medium textured. Its grain can be irregularly patterned with a less uniform stripe than Sapele. Sipo smells slightly like cedar and is corrosive to metals.
Sipo works fairly easily with hand tools and machines. It finishes well and can be glued and nailed easily.
Durable and moderately resistant to rot and termites, Sipo is used in cabinetry, countertops, furniture, joinery, guitars, boat construction, veneers and plywood.
